Our March program is entitled: Arming Ohio - the infantry arms of the 1861 volunteers and the influence of arms altered by Miles Greenwood of Cincinnati on arming Ohio's first volunteers. This presentation will include a display of many of the infantry arms issued to Ohio's 1861 infantry regiments. presented by Historian Phil Spaugy.
Phil's main areas of study and interest have been in the arms and accoutrements of the Federal infantry soldier with an emphasis on soldiers from the great state of OHIO and the firearms of the U.S Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Phil is also a contributing editor and columnist for Military Images magazine and a consultant for Civil War New magazine. He has also done historical research and editing for authors such as Ron Coddington (Military Images magazine), Lance Herdegen, Eric Wittenberg, Dave Powell, Dan Masters, Scott Mingus, Mike Eisenhut, Don Troiani and others.
Phil has been a member of Union Guards, Company A, 19th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry of the North South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) for the last 46 years and has live-fired almost every type of firearm issued to both sides during the American Civil War.
